Tokelau Southern Cross NEXT submarine cable

About the Project

About the Project

Co-funded by New Zealand and the Tokelau government, the Tokelau Southern Cross NEXT submarine cable connects Tokelau’s Nukunonu atoll to the regional Southern Cross NEXT network. A domestic cable was subsequently built to link Nukunonu, Atafu, and Fakaofo, ensuring all three atolls benefit from improved connectivity. Completed in 2022, the Southern Cross NEXT cable enhances digital infrastructure by providing a faster, more affordable, and more reliable internet connection between New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.

In September 2021, Nukunonu atoll was officially connected to the Southern Cross NEXT submarine fibre-optic network.
