Port Vila, Vanuatu – 13 May 2026 – Vanuatu’s National E‑commerce Symposium 2026 was successfully held as part of the broader 2026 Digital Week, under the national theme “Innovate Today, Sustain Tomorrow,” while adopting a dedicated focus on “Empowering a Digital‑Friendly Economy.” The one‑day event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to celebrate progress in Vanuatu’s e‑commerce sector and to strengthen dialogue on its future development.
The 2026 Symposium also marked an important milestone as the 4th National E‑commerce Symposium held since 2021, following the development of Vanuatu’s first National E‑commerce Strategy and Roadmap. Since its inception, the Symposium has been convened periodically as a key platform to showcase progress, raise awareness, and support the implementation of the Strategy, particularly by encouraging greater uptake of e‑commerce across sectors.
While notable progress has been made, implementation of the Strategy currently stands at approximately 45% completion, highlighting both achievements and the continued work required. As the Strategy reaches the end of its cycle this year, discussions at the Symposium also served as a timely opportunity to reflect on lessons learned and inform the renewal of the national strategy moving forward.
A central highlight of the event was the panel discussions, which were carefully designed to capture both policy‑level insights and industry experiences.
The first panel, held at the policy level under the theme “E‑commerce Stories: Building Trust, Access, and Innovation Across Sectors,” brought together key institutional stakeholders. Representatives from the United Nation Capital Development Fund, the Vanuatu Competition and Consumer Commission, Vodafone Vanuatu, the Telecommunications Radiocommunications Regulator, and the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu participated in this discussion. The panel explored how regulatory frameworks, digital infrastructure, financial inclusion, and consumer trust are shaping the country’s e‑commerce landscape, emphasizing the need for coordinated action across sectors to support sustainable growth.
The second panel shifted focus to the private sector, featuring local businesses actively operating within Vanuatu’s e‑commerce ecosystem. Under the theme “Bridging Tradition and Technology: Innovative Vanuatu E‑commerce Businesses,” the panel included Kakai Koko, an online delivery service and a grand recipient of PIFS E-commerce grant; 83 Islands Distillery, a locally established brewery and distillery; and Regor Express, an online taxi service company. This session provided valuable insights into the real‑world experiences of entrepreneurs, highlighting their journeys from start‑up to market entry. Panelists shared the opportunities and challenges they face in navigating the digital landscape, including logistics constraints, market access, customer engagement, and digital adoption.
Ms Francisca Miller, Senior E‑commerce Officer at the Vanuatu Ministry of Trade and Commerce, highlighted that “the Symposium underscored the importance of continued collaboration between government, private sector, and development partners in strengthening Vanuatu’s e‑commerce ecosystem. It reaffirmed the country’s commitment to leveraging digital technologies to support economic growth, innovation, and resilience.”
